Marked by the gradual extinguishing of candles throughout the service to end in darkness, Tenebrae is based upon ancient traditions dating back to the 9th century in celebrating Matins and Lauds of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday from the liturgy of the hours. Through this gradual descent into shadows we meditate through readings and music on the story of Holy week and the Passion and suffering of Christ.
